OUR JOURNEY TO PROBIOTIC DAIRY-FREE YOGURTS

“Something Different, Something Better” is the leading mantra behind all that we do at Califia, serving as the North Star behind every product that we make and truly the driving force behind our most recent pursuit: Probiotic Dairy-Free Yogurts. As advocates for plant-based lifestyles, we take pride in producing deliciously dairy-free plant-milks, creamers, blended coffees, and juices. To us, wellness starts with what we put in our bodies and we strive to continually explore the health benefits of plant-powered food, without sacrificing on taste.

Enter gut health. Time and time again, we came across the power of a healthy gut thanks to probiotics. However, the market for probiotics is confusing and difficult to navigate—not to mention in the dairy-free world. As stewards of wellness and nutrition we took it upon ourselves to conquer the world of probiotics, and deliver a product with proven efficacy. We worked with clinical researchers and dieticians to learn the ins and outs of gut-friendly bacteria and how best to incorporate them into our diets.

WHAT WE LEARNED

The type of probiotic is just as important as the number of probiotics, and there are three key players worth seeking out: Bifidobacterium, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. Our specific strain of Bifidobacterium, BB-12ä, is like a quarterback – it helps lead the production of vitamins, immune system response and healthy digestion. Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus complete the team by reducing bloat and most importantly creating an optimal environment for BB-12 to thrive. BB-12 is the most documented bifidobacteria and has shown seriously awesome benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Fighting bad yeasts and promoting good yeast (aka, happy gut flora)
  • Tackling bad bacteria, like salmonella and promoting good bacteria
  • Improving your immune system while reducing inflammation
  • Lowering chances of diarrhea, constipation and other irritable bowel symptoms
  • Overall promoting intestinal homeostasis, which is just geek-speak for when your gut is a smooth operator, everything else in your body functions better

Sounds pretty great, right? Except, we discovered there was one thing missing from this probiotic puzzle: a plant-based alternative to all the dairy-based yogurt and kefirs lining our market shelves. And, moreover, a truly fermented, whole food version.

NATURALLY, WE MADE OUR OWN

We started with creating the Califia Culture Blend—our own proprietary blend of 10 billion live, active probiotic CFUs (colony forming units) powered by the 3 star players: BB-12, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus. When building any team, it's important to get the right combination of strengths and capabilities to meet your goal. Our goal being gut health, we sought out players with a proven track record in fighting off viruses, removing bad bacteria, decreasing inflammation and aiding in digestion.

Once we nailed the probiotic blend, we knew the best way method of delivery wasn’t simply adding it at the end. Just as eating whole foods makes the nutrition more viable, probiotics should also be a part of the food from the start, rather than an additive afterthought. What does this mean? Our Califia Culture Blend grows in our uniquely formulated almond and coconut base and is batch fermented to grow with the product instead of “fortifying” the food after it’s all said and done. And, we used real fruits in the mix to enhance the experience. The result? A whole food with 10 billion live and active probiotics ready to mingle the moment you take a sip.
